January Newsletter

Dear Parents,
I hope you and the students all have a wonderful winter break. We'll be starting the new year with the ELA book, Meet Erdene. It will take us on a trip to Mongolia and its culture. Students will gather a lot of surprising differences between Mongolian and Korean life. They will learn to see things in the perspective of Mongolians, and broaden their mind to where people live. We will learn interesting Mongolian words at the same time!  For our culminating task, students will create a personal story like that of Erdene’s. It will be similar to an autobiography and students will be guided step by step each week.

We are switching gears in science. We will begin our Matter unit from this month. Students will understand that everything in the world is made out of matter.  We will look closely at three states of matter - solids, liquids, and gases - through observations and hands-on investigations.

We will move into the Sorting and Data Management unit in math. They will learn to sort using charts and Venn diagrams by two and three attributes. They will also learn how to collect data using surveys and tally charts along with various ways to show data using different graphs.
